The Lion ....
One of the trivia questions asked to a concert audience was when the current house system of Condors, Lions, Phoenix and Tigers began. The answer was 1977. It was interesting to note that the inter-house rivalry had not abated over the years, though I suspect that most of the rivalry at Songfest came from the older students (including myself) from that era. The Phoenix flag went missing, and as for the missing 'D' ... Fortunately, all the rivalry was good natured, not taken seriously, and added to the spirit of the event. As I like stories with morals, here's a story to share:
Toni
The mighty Lion was walking through the jungle one bright sunny day. The day was warm, it felt good to be alive, and he was feeling particularly pleased with himself. On his travels he came across a hippopotamus. Said the Lion to the hippo "Who is the King of the Jungle?".
"Oh you are mighty Lion" came the reply.
Feeling pleased with himself the Lion continued his journey through the jungle until he came across the Tiger. "Who is the King of the Jungle?" asked the Lion.
A loud roar was his response. The Lion stepped forward menacingly and roared "Who is the King of the Jungle?"
The slightly subdued Tiger mumbled back "You are".
"I can't hear you" growled the Lion.
"Oh you are mighty Lion" said the Tiger grudgingly.
Feeling even more pleased with himself, and taking pride in his position in the jungle the Lion marched on until he came across a large bird who was singing. "What are you?" asked the Lion.
"I'm a Conor" said the bird. "I like to sing and sing and sing, all day long".
"I've never heard of a Conor" said the Lion, "but do you know who the King of the Jungle is?".
"Why you are, mighty Lion" sang the Conor, adding another six choruses about how mighty the Lion was and of the Lion's fabled exploits in the jungle.
The Lion was feeling extremely proud by now - a stranger had heard of him and praised him in many ways. He was surely the King of the Jungle. He travelled on his ways until at last he came upon a beautiful bird whom he recognised as the Phoenix. Seeking to impress, "Who is the King of the Jungle?" boasted the Lion rhetorically.
Instantly the Phoenix burst into flame, crisping up the Lion's mane so he looked like a charcoal toilet brush. Then the Phoenix flexed its wings, slapping the Lion first one way and then the next. The poor Lion was somewhat bewildered and rather sore, whereupon the Phoenix grabbed him with its mighty talons, carried him high into the air and dropped him.
All the crumpled, sorry Lion could manage as the Phoenix landed next to him was to open one eye and mutter "Alright, alright. There's no need to get mad just because you didn't know the answer!"
The moral being: "If you wish to impress a beautiful bird, don't boast about yourself"
and you thought it had something to do about pride coming before a fall?
